The Learning Curve

Most often we have thought that a well-balanced meal needs to include an animal protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. However, we have a number of customers who think differently, and this is getting our attention.

They are eliminating certain carbohydrates, especially grains, and are seeing positive results; more energy, better sleep, better elimination, and many are losing weight.

One of our customers, a retired physician, puts it very simply, “If we want our beef to come from cattle that don’t consume grain, why in the world are we consuming so much grain?”

Does eating meat from a grain fed animal equate to our eating grain products? We want our beef from animals that don’t consume grain, yet we humans eat so many grain products. These products are everywhere! Are we in a Learning Curve?

I’d like your opinion and comments. Text Doug: 405-834-9240.

Triplets

Quite often we get twins from our ewes – mama sheep, but triplets are fairly rare. When a ewe gives birth to triplets, she will often abandon the weakest one. This is just how nature operates. You see, a ewe has just 2 teats; therefore, she can accommodate no more than two at a time. However, this year we have three sets of triplets! The mamas are taking all their babies and they’re doing great so far! They’re learning the concept of sharing!

New births of lambs and calves on the farm is such an enjoyable happening. Just the wonder of whether you’re going to get a boy or girl is one of nature’s best surprises!

MEAT AVAILABILITY:
We should have briskets for everyone this summer.
Our overall supply is good at the moment. however, this can go fast – as we have seen.
Half and whole beeves are booking for late July & August.
We are now stocking a good supply of organ meats - heart, liver, tongue and kidney.

A Mother’s Child

A mother’s influence on her children cannot be more obvious than that of a mama cow and her baby. At BF Farms, that baby will spend 9 months by its mother’s side, nursing and learning. Yes, learning how to live a healthy life on grasses and forbs. What the baby sees the mother eat, is what the baby eats.

It’s the lifestyle on the farm that has allowed BF Farms to bypass vaccinations generally recommended by veterinarians. Good nutrition always trumps medication!

It’s really gratifying to see so many young families, human families, setting this good example for their young ones. Shucks, they’re even setting a good example for me! Thank you!

MEAT AVAILABILITY:

After being out of organ meats for a while, we now have a fairly good supply. It looks like people are realizing the nutritional value of heart, liver, and kidneys.

Half & whole beeves are available from July on into the future.

Eighth and Quarter beef options will be available soon.

Individual cuts are very limited.

Painful

Yes, it’s painful, but we have to do what we have to do. We must raise our prices. This energy crisis has really impacted BF Farms. We have been a very efficient model for raising truly 100% grass finished beef & lamb. However, as we are learning, outside forces that are out of our control must be addressed. Prices have been increased by virtually $1.00 per pound on all options.

The one thing we will not let happen - we will not slack on quality! Quality is of utmost importance for health, and we will not succumb to lesser quality for a cheaper price.

You, our customers, have been an inspiration to us, and we have learned so much from you. Your passion for healthy food choices for you and your families is impressive.

MEAT AVAILABILITY:
We’re taking orders for half and whole beef for late May and early June. We are out of most other options until mid-April.

Lambs: We have a few lambs left for April and May purchase, then we go to fall lambs.

A Growing Movement

Taking Control! There is a small movement of families wanting to take better control of their food sources. I hear this comment often, “I would love to find a small acreage for my family to live on.” They go on to say, “We could raise our own fruits and vegetables, have chickens for eggs and meat, and just a wonderful way to raise our kids.”

The fact is, we already know families who have made this transition because of the uncertainty of the food supply and the quality of commercial foods.  Just the fact that we are in control of our family’s health, means so much.

Families who don’t have the means to move, or who just aren’t interested in an acreage, are still looking for ways to feel more food-secure.

BF Farms is researching ways to do this in small areas and in our own gardens.

Stay tuned!

Meat availability:
As for beef, most all options are available.

It’s spring lamb season. Lambs are available in April & May.

BF Farms is ready for spring!
