Breckinridge Flats

What we haven’t told you!

Many times, at BF Farms, we take too much credit for the flavor of our meat. Yes, the beeves and lambs are raised only on grasses and legumes, with no antibiotics, no hormones, no grains, and no GMOs. BUT, there is more!

Call it luck, fate, or timing, but then we must admit, BF Farms is located on the high-end of the Breckinridge Flats. Breckinridge Flats is a 10 by 3-mile strip of land between Breckinridge & Garber, Oklahoma.

Old-timers in the area have shared stories with me how buffalo once roamed freely over this area, and how they preferred grazing on the high end of these Breckinridge Flats. This is evidenced by the number of “buffalo wallows” left behind by the buffalo. Luckily, my grandfather chose to settle on the high end of Breckinridge Flats in 1921 – and the rest is history!

So, let’s give some credit where credit is due; Location, Location, Location.

Meat availability:
We processed extra beef in December, so our supply is good going into the new year.
Lambs go to the processor in March. We still have a few available. If you want one, don’t wait.

I’m certainly looking forward to 2023. 2022 was a struggle, with newly born calves freezing and the incredible drought.

Don’t squat with your spurs on.

Canada

Yes, we are having to go within 30 miles of the Canadian border to find quality hay for our cattle. This drought that covers a large area, including BF Farms, has gotten so bad that hay is difficult to find – at ANY price!

With so much negativity, I just wanted to find some humor…

Kit Pharo, a rancher in Colorado, asked: Is “sustainable agriculture” an oxymoron? An oxymoron occurs when two contradicting words are used together. Examples: cold sweat, student teacher, friendly fire, holy war, paid volunteer, dry wine, hard water & government intelligence.

Just know, we are fighting through this!

BF Farms’ Best Buys

Yes, we get asked this question from time to time… “What is your best buy?”

Is getting the most meat per dollar spent, always the best buy? The answer is yes, if your family enjoys all cuts that a beef provides. A beef can give you as many as 25 different cuts.

A half & whole beef costs approximately $9.50 per pound & includes cuts that cost, $12, $20, $27, & $37 per pound. These cuts may be 40% of the beef.

This is your bonus for ordering a half or whole beef!

Eighth and quarter beef options are a little more – but still under $10 per pound.

Now, if you are a family who does not - or will not - eat many cuts of a beef, ordering a half or whole beef may be not right for you. Getting exactly what you enjoy is always your best buy.

For example, ground beef & roasts are favorites. Steaks are a favorite for other customers, which are typically limited in supply. However, they are always available in an eighth, quarter, half and whole beef option.

We also provide items like brisket, short ribs, stew meat, liver, heart, tongue, broth bones, suet, etc. We strive to meet all our customers’ needs and wants so that everyone has the greatest benefit from their grass-finished beef.

Finding Positives

When challenging times are upon us, as we are experiencing now at BF Farms, we must look for positives. This heat and drought are extreme. We have had 3 animals die from the heat, and along with high-energy costs, we could get negative. But it could be worse. Many cattlemen have lost more, and some have had to sell part of their herd.

Now the positives… look at those pear trees loaded with fruit – the best we’ve ever had. As for our cattle? We are seeing them actually getting accustomed to the heat. Can’t say that for me! And the best positive? In spite of so many negatives, our beeves are still finishing well.

We also have exciting plans for the future – because it WILL rain. This is what keeps us going!
