The Last Trimester

Lessons Learned on the Farm

A big lesson we have learned on the farm is how important a calf’s growth and development is during its last 3 months in its mother’s womb.

During these last 3 months, a calf is having somewhat of a growth spurt. Nutrition, and especially protein, is very important for the mother. This period is important because it can affect the natural health of that calf for its entire life.

It’s almost crazy, but this period in a calf’s life can have an effect on the quality of its meat two years down the road – when you’re sitting down at the dinner table for a nice, juicy steak! Yes, the taste and tenderness of that steak partly depends on what its mother ate during that last trimester.

When the beef industry tends to place its emphasis on the last 3 months a calf spends in the feedlot, we at BF Farms realize these last 3 months in its mother’s womb is when it begins!

Offal

Yes, “offal” is the correct name for organ meats. Many would agree they are “awful”, but organ meats offer an abundance of vitamins and minerals that we don’t normally receive in our daily diet.

BF Farms & Urban Agrarian are partnering to offer one-pound packages of 90% lean ground beef with 10% heart, liver, & kidney – all from BF Farm’s beef. And best for some folks - you can’t even taste the organ meats!

I personally encourage you to include this option in your weekly meal plans. Why? Read on…

Benefits: Beef liver is one of the most nutritious foods available. It’s rich in Vitamins B12, B6, B2, Folacin, Niacin, A, D, E, & K – along with Iron, Selenium, Zinc, and others. Check it out for yourself.

Beef heart is rich in the B vitamins, kidney is rich in omega-3 fatty acid. This is a combination that’s difficult to get.

MEAT AVAILABILITY:

The lean ground beef/organ meat blend is available from both BF Farms & UA (Urban Agrarian).

We are now booking ½ & whole beeves for December. Also, we now have a good supply of 85/15 ground beef.

Don’t squat with your spurs on.

Lessons Learned on the Farm:

“A Dare”

Dare to be better than you think you can be!

At BF Farms, we are doing things today that we didn’t think possible a few years ago. When we started raising grass finished beef, we pretty well followed the industry standard. We raised good, healthy beef, and questioned, “Can we make it better?”

Then this happened – even though no one before us had done it, we took a group of beeves to a little older age before slaughter. And did we learn something new! Industry says to push your animals so they will be ready in 18 months. We went to 24 months and opened up a whole new product with enhanced taste & tenderness.

Lesson learned? Don’t buy it when someone says, “you can’t” – and especially don’t buy it when you’re telling yourself, “I can’t”!

MEAT AVAILABILITY:
The next half & whole beef options are available for November 15th.
Eight (8) lambs are available for November 30th.
Again, thanks for keeping us informed of your needs.

Don’t squat with your spurs on.

“Freddy Freckles”

A few years back, when we purchased our first ewes, Freddy was part of the deal. We were told that a llama would guard our sheep and keep them safe from predators. Since we rely on guard dogs, Freddy wasn’t taken seriously. Today, that has all changed!

llama.jpg

If you’re a stranger and walk out in a sheep paddock where Freddy is guarding, he will meet you head-on. In fact, he will walk you right back out of his domain. His size alone gets your attention. You don’t sneak upon him either, as llamas have exceptional eye sight. They can spot an intruder a mile away.

So, when you’re enjoying that next meal of lamb, know that Freddy did his part!

Meat availability:
We still have 10 lambs left for November. The next round will not be available again until April & May of next year.

We have whole and half beeves available for mid and late October.

We’re sold out of ground beef with organ meats. However, more will be coming soon!

“1921”

100 years ago, BF Farms was born.

My grandmother, Minnie, and her husband, Oscar, were the first generation of our family to work the farm. It was Minnie who left an impression on me. She loved seeing what the earth would grow; apricot trees, blackberry bushes and much, much more.

When friends told her she couldn’t grow something, she found a way! Today, at BF Farms, we are reliving the Minnie mindset.

And just like Minnie, we’re finding a way to let mother earth do her thing!

Many meals prepared by BF Farms’ family members come 100% from the farm; vegetables and fruits from the garden and meat from the animals.

Meat Availability as of 9/1/21:
We now have jerky-cut meat!

Lean ground meat with 10% organ meat is really catching on. Families like the idea of getting the healthy organs and not tasting it.

I want to thank all of our ½ and whole beef customers for keeping us informed of your needs. It sure helps us manage our inventory. We still have a few available for September.

Eighth and quarter beef options are available now.
